Plan types

Understand the main mobile plan structures

Use this guide to identify which general plan format may be most relevant to your circumstances.

SIM-only

A SIM-only plan normally provides mobile service without including a new handset. It may be useful when your current phone still meets your needs.

  • Check that the handset is compatible and unlocked where required.
  • Compare contract duration, renewal terms and allowance.
  • Review roaming, tethering and any fair-use conditions.

Pay-monthly with a handset

These plans normally combine the cost of a device with calls, texts and data. The monthly figure can be convenient, but the full contract cost should be reviewed carefully.

  • Add together upfront and recurring payments.
  • Check the duration of the device and service commitment.
  • Read what happens if you leave early or miss a payment.

Data-only

Data-focused plans are intended mainly for internet access on compatible tablets, routers or connected devices. Calls and standard texts may not be included.

  • Estimate monthly use before choosing an allowance.
  • Check network coverage independently for your location.
  • Review speed, usage and tethering terms.

Shorter and longer agreements

A shorter agreement may offer more flexibility, while a longer term can spread costs over more months. Neither is automatically better; the key is whether the commitment matches your needs and budget.
